Vico in "The New Science" makes the point that the three key components to any human society are the way in which a society handles birth, marriage, and burial. I would go one step further and say that these are the three most important things to any human being. Who my parents are, the family I ultimately choose to adopt for myself, and my destination after death are the three things that will, in the end, define my life the most.
I have been re-reading through Genesis lately and I have been discovering that the book is very much structured to focus on these three types of events: birth events, marriage events, and burial events. Thats pretty much the way Genesis flows.
I think a lot about my life, perhaps too much. I guess, when I really break it down, Im thinking about one of these three things. They are the three questions that probably dominate the thought life of every human being on the planet.
